After you have taken your deck measurements and calculated the length of cable and quantity of hardware you need, it’s time to order the materials and hardware.
Watch this video to see an overview of the hardware required for the cable railing install.
This 1/8″ Diameter 1×19 Strand Configuration Stainless Steel Cable is the top pick for a wood post cable rail install. If you want to know more detailed information about the stainless cable, read the following post.
When used in 4in wood deck posts, these threaded cable ends are almost totally hidden. Only the tightening nut and acorn nut will be visible.
You will need a hydraulic crimper capable of properly crimping 1/8in stainless cable hardware.
The Stainless Steel Stemball Cable Dead End are crimped onto the opposite end of the cable from the Threaded Stud End. The quality of these is very good. They are available in packs of 20, 50 or 100 pcs.

Although the Threaded Stud Ends come with washers, I found them to be too small in outer diameter, and more likely to dig into the wood when tightening. The Stemball Cable Dead End does not come with a washer but will work better in wood posts if one is added. The washers will also prevent the cable stud ends from sinking into the wood post over time, which will help the cables maintain tension.
One washer per cable end is required.
